Samsung to introduce 'the next Galaxy' on March 14

"Ready 4 the show," an invitation sent to members of the press teases, blatantly hinting that we'll be seeing the Galaxy S 4 ? the highly anticipated follow-up to the Galaxy S III smartphone ? at the event being held by Samsung on March 14.

The event will take place in New York City at 7 p.m. ET. (We'll be there to cover it live, of course.)

The Galaxy S 4 ? we're assuming by the big "4" that the only change to Samsung's incredibly consistent naming approach will be to drop the Roman numerals ? will be the company's newest flagship device.

A poster spotted by AnandTech's Brian Klug during a visit to Samsung's demo room at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January suggests that the Galaxy S 4 could be rocking a 4.99-inch 1080p screen with a whopping 440 pixels per inch. While the iPhone 5 offers the significantly less dense 326 ppi, it's worth noting that it's practically impossible for human eyes to tell the difference. After a certain point, the individual pixels simply become indistinguishable.

That's about all we know (or think we know) about the Galaxy S 4 for now, so Samsung could have plenty of surprises waiting up its sleeves come March 14.

Build Your Own T-Shirt Folding Board With Cardboard and Duct Tape

Employees at clothing stores use special boards to quickly and perfectly fold their merchandise, and you can create the same tool at home with some scrap cardboard and tape.

The video above will walk you through the simple process. It's similar to the clothes folding "machine" we mentioned long ago, but the design is far simpler. Once you're done, you'll be making crisp folds in mere seconds. Using this contraption probably isn't as fast as the Japanese two-second folding technique, but it's nice to have around for anyone else in your house who hasn't learned that trick.

NATO: No evidence for Afghan claim of misconduct

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan has so far found no evidence to support Afghan allegations of misconduct by American special forces in a strategic eastern province, the alliance's spokesman said on Monday.

German Gen. Gunter Katz said the International Security Assistance Force will work with the government to find a solution to the concerns of Afghans, but could not yet comment on the allegations that Afghans connected with U.S. special forces were involved in abuses that include torture, killings and illegal detentions.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday ordered all U.S. special forces to leave Wardak within two weeks and requested that their operations there cease immediately. The restive province, which neighboring Kabul province and is viewed as a gateway to the capital, has been the focus of counterinsurgency efforts in recent years.

On Sunday, the Afghan defense ministry said in a statement that it had "demanded the special forces evacuate the areas according to the timeline" given by Karzai.

The decision followed a meeting of Karzai's National Security Council during which Wardak provincial governor Abdul Majid Khogyani and local officials said that Afghans working with U.S. special forces were responsible for the disappearance of at least nine men and the murder of an Afghan university student. Khogyani and the other officials also presented allegations that the Afghans working for the American special forces were involved in abusive behavior.

The armed Afghans are not part of the Afghan security forces, the government has said, implying that they are members of secret militias working with the American special forces.

"Those Afghans in these armed groups who are working with the U.S. special forces, the defense minister asked for an explanation of who they are," presidential spokesman Aimal Faizi said late Sunday. "Those individuals should be handed over to the Afghan side so that we can further investigate."

Although a presidential statement suggested that U.S. forces could also be involved, the Afghan government said it mostly wanted to know about the armed Afghans ? who have been blamed by local residents for the abuses.

"We take all allegations of misconduct seriously and go to great lengths to determine the facts surrounding them," Katz told reporters. "Over the past few weeks there have been various allegations of Special Forces conducting themselves in an unprofessional manner" in Wardak.

He added that "so far, we could not find evidence that would support these allegations."

Katz says that ISAF cannot comment until NATO meets to discuss the issue with the Afghan government.

"Until we have had a chance to speak to senior officials in the government of Afghanistan about this issue, I am not in a position to comment further on details regarding what has been said at the National Security Council," Katz said. "We will talk to Afghan officials in due course."

Sunday's order seems to have surprised both NATO and U.S. Forces Afghanistan, which is a separate command.

Renesas announces bigLITTLE mobile processor with nextgen PowerVR Series6 graphics

If Samsung likes an open playing field, it'll not be best pleased by this latest announcement from Japanese chip maker Renesas. Uncannily named the "APE6", it directly copies the same big.LITTLE design of ARM cores found in Sammy's Exynos Octa. The are four Cortex-A15s paired with the same number of Cortex-A7s, allowing a phone or tablet to switch between the two quad-core configurations depending on its workload. Interestingly, whereas the Exynos Octa's GPU has been rumored to contain a last-gen PowerVR Series5 GPU similar to that found in the iPad and PS Vita, the APE6 will come with a more future proof Series6 "Rogue" design. We've already spent some time with this GPU and it'll be a good day when we can finally try it out in a finished device and stack it up against a rival bearing Samsung internals.

(AP) ? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is encouraging celebrities to tweet during the Oscars.

The film organization has expanded its digital outreach for the 85th Academy Awards with a new feature that lets stars to snap photos of themselves backstage during Sunday's ceremony and instantly post them online.

What Twitter calls a "Magic Mirror" will take photo-booth-style pictures of participating stars in the green room and send them out on the academy's official Twitter account. Organizers expect multiple celebrity mash-ups.

The backstage green room is a private place for stars to hang out before taking the stage and is typically closed to press and photographers.

The Magic Mirror is "giving access to fans at home a part of the show they never got to experience before," Twitter spokeswoman Elaine Filadelfo said Friday.

A new video-on-demand/instant replay feature also being introduced Sunday will allow Oscar fans to view show highlights online moments after they happen and share them with friends on Twitter and Facebook. Dozens of clips from the red carpet and the awards telecast will be available on the official Oscar website beyond Sunday's ceremony.

Oscar.com also offers other behind-the-scenes interactive features, including various backstage camera perspectives and a new live blog that aggregates the show's presence across social media. It will track the traffic on whatever makes a splash, like Angelina Jolie's right leg did last year.

The academy wants to make its second-screen experience just as rich as its primary one.

"Social media is now mainstream," said Christina Kounelias, chief marketing officer for the academy.

"We're not doing social media to reach out to young kids," said the academy's digital media director, Josh Spector. "We're doing it to connect with all Oscar fans."

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? There are two certainties heading into the Daytona 500: Kevin Harvick is the favorite, and no one is sure what the action will look like in the "Great American Race."

Harvick remained perfect through Speedweeks on Thursday by winning the first of two 150-mile Budweiser Duel qualifying races, and the victory has positioned him as the top pick to win NASCAR's version of the Super Bowl.

Being labeled the favorite is the last thing the 2007 Daytona 500 winner wanted headed into Sunday's season-opener.

"We like to be the lame-duck underdog. That's what we're shooting for," Harvick said.

Harvick is a perfect 2 for 2 at Daytona International Speedway. He also won an exhibition race last weekend. This strong start comes at a time when Harvick has found a balance in his life with the addition of son, Keelan, who was born last July, and as he heads into his final season with Richard Childress Racing. Harvick has already decided to move to Stewart-Haas Racing in 2014.

"We've been fortunate to win the first two races of Speedweeks. We've just got to keep a level head on our shoulders, not get too high over what we've done, just do the same things that we've done," he said. "If it's meant to be, it's meant to be. I think we definitely have the car and team to be in contention to do that."

But nobody is quite sure what the 500 will look like with NASCAR's new Gen-6 race car. Sunday's race will go off with a full 43-car field, double the amount of cars that ran in Thursday's qualifying races. There were 19 cars in last Saturday's exhibition.

Kyle Busch, winner of the second duel, believes more cars on the track will create a much different race than what fans have seen so far. All three races at Speedweeks to date have lacked much action as drivers continue to learn the new cars and how it reacts in traffic and different aerodynamic situations.

"With more cars out there, we might see it be a little bit different come Sunday," Busch said. "There were half the field in each race, obviously. There's going to be twice as many good cars, twice as many middle of the pack cars, twice as many back of the pack cars. If you can get your car handling, driving, feeling good, you'll be able to be one of the guys that's up front."

Is Busch, who was wrecked out of last week's exhibition just 15 laps into the race, one of those guys?

"I feel that's where we're at," Busch said. "That's an added bonus for us right now."

Busch gave Toyota its first victory of Speedweeks and snapped Chevrolet's dominance. Harvick took the new Chevrolet SS to Victory Lane twice, and Danica Patrick put it on the Daytona 500 pole in time trials.

Busch held off Kasey Kahne, in a Chevrolet, and learned the driver out front is in the strongest position.

"It's hard to pass the leader," said Busch. "Stay out front. When you get out front, you can hold everyone off."

But Kahne, who settled for second, said timing will be critical and nobody is sure just yet what move will be needed to win the Daytona 500.

"I think it's tough because you don't know when you get that push. You don't know when it plays into your time," said Kahne, who never got close enough to Busch to take a solid shot at the win. "I think you need to be ready at any time to get to the front, to second, to third, try to move up. I don't think waiting till the last lap is a ticket the way things are right now."

And Kahne wasn't ready to give Harvick the win in the big race, either.

"I think Kevin looks really good," he said. "He's got this place figured out. I think he can be beat, yeah. There's a few of us in the second race who had really good cars, and I could move around really well, similar to what Harvick did in the first race."

In the first race, Harvick held off Greg Biffle over a four-lap sprint to win. Harvick and Biffle also went 1-2 in last Saturday night's exhibition race.

The starting field for the Daytona 500 is set by the results from the pair of 60-lap qualifiers, but Patrick held onto the pole by running a safe race in the first qualifier. The first woman to win a pole at NASCAR's top level, Patrick earned the top starting spot in time trials last weekend.

She started first in the first qualifier, raced a bit early, then faded back to run a conservative race and ensure she'll start first in the 500.

"I hate coming to the end like that and just lagging back," she said. "That's not fun. But it's also really ignorant to go drive up into the pack and be part of an accident for absolutely no reason. You're really not going to learn much there."

Patrick wound up 17th out of 23 cars.

"What I really feel like I need to do is go down to the Harvick bus and see what he's doing," she said. "He's got it going on down here."

The first race was dull until Denny Hamlin brought out the only caution with seven laps remaining. Hamlin lost control of his car, spun into Carl Edwards and triggered a four-car accident that also collected Regan Smith and Trevor Bayne, who had a dominant car early in the qualifier.

"I know what the wrecks look like now, I am really familiar with them," said Edwards, who was wrecked at testing in January and in practice for the exhibition race last week. He was also black-flagged in the exhibition race when his window net fell off.

Hamlin said the accident was a product of drivers trying to learn the nuances of NASCAR's new Gen-6 car.

"It just shows you that any kind of bad aero position you put yourself in, your car can be vulnerable," said Hamlin, who was running in the high line when he inched into Edwards' space down low.

Juan Pablo Montoya, who infamously crashed into a jet dryer during last year's Daytona 500 to trigger a massive fuel fire, stopped for minor repairs during the caution. Montoya restarted the race in 13th with four laps remaining, but rocketed through the field to finish third.

"It was time to go," he said. "It's hard, you don't want to tear up the car, and at the same time you want to go. The bumpers are a little fragile. You have to be careful with that. You want to have a good car at the end."

The bulk of both races seemed to be one long parade of the Gen-6 race car. Unsure of how the cars handle in packs, and when the drivers choose to side-draft, most of the field in the first race played it conservatively.

"The choice was obviously made by a bunch of us to run around in circles and just make laps," said two-time Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip, who needed a clean race to guarantee a spot in Sunday's field. "There were a lot of people that just wanted to get through some laps and understand what was going on. There were some of us that would have run like that until they threw the checkered just to make the race. And then there were some that decided it was time to go, and they made it work."

Waltrip is racing in a special Sandy Hook Special Support Fund paint scheme, and his car number has been changed to No. 26 as a tribute to the 26 students and teachers killed in the Newtown, Conn., school shooting.

"There's a lot of people up in Connecticut with a smile on their face right now. I'm real proud to get in the race for them," Waltrip said.

Austin Dillon, grandson of team owner Richard Childress, finished third in the second qualifying race to put his Richard Childress Racing car in the Daytona 500. It will be the 22-year-old Dillon's first Daytona 500.

"I'm glad my grandfather can sleep now," Dillon said. "He was wearing me out before the race."

Brian Keselowski, older brother of reigning Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski, was the one driver who truly had to race his way into the Daytona 500 in the first qualifier. But he lacked speed early, fell two laps down and missed the race.

Mike Bliss was the driver from the second qualifier trying to make the Daytona 500 field, but finished five laps down and didn't make the race.

NKorea to allow mobile Internet for foreigners

North Korean citizens will not have access to the new 3G mobile Internet service. (AP Photo/Jon Chol Jin, File)

(AP) ? North Korea will soon allow foreigners to tweet, Skype and surf the Internet from their cellphones, iPads and other mobile devices in its second relaxation of controls on communications in recent weeks. However, North Korean citizens will not have access to the mobile Internet service to be offered by provider Koryolink within the next week.

Koryolink, a joint venture between Korea Post & Telecommunications Corporation and Egypt's Orascom Telecom Media and Technology Holding SAE, informed foreign residents in Pyongyang on Friday that it will launch a third generation, or 3G, mobile Internet service no later than March 1.

The announcement comes just weeks after North Korea began allowing foreigners to bring their own cellphones into the country to use with Koryolink SIM cards, reversing a longstanding rule requiring most visitors to relinquish their phones at customs and leaving many without easy means of communication with the outside world.

The two changes in policy mean foreigners in North Korea will have unprecedented connectivity while living, working or traveling in a country long regarded as one of the most isolated nations in the world.

However, wireless Internet will not yet be offered to North Koreans, who are governed by a separate set of telecommunication rules from foreigners. North Koreans will be allowed to access certain 3G services, including SMS and MMS messaging, video calls and subscriptions to the state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper ? but not the global Internet.

The lack of Internet access in North Korea has put the country at the bottom of Internet freedom surveys. Though North Korea is equipped for broadband Internet, only a small, approved segment of the population has access to the World Wide Web.

During a visit to Pyongyang early last month, Google's executive chairman pressed the North Koreans to expand access to the Internet. Eric Schmidt noted that it would be "very easy" for North Korea to offer Internet on Koryolink's fast-expanding 3G cellphone network.

"As the world becomes increasingly connected, the North Korean decision to be virtually isolated is very much going to affect their physical world and their economic growth," he wrote in a Jan. 20 blog post after returning to the United States. "It will make it harder for them to catch up economically. It is their choice now, and in my view, it's time for them to start, or they will remain behind."

Soon after Schmidt's visit, Google unveiled maps of North Korea with more details based on contributions from foreigners using satellite images and publicly available information to map the country. Before, North Korea was left mostly blank in Google Maps but with the update, Pyongyang and major North Korean cities are shown with street names, parks, roads, train stops and monuments.

Cellphone use has multiplied in North Korea since Orascom built a 3G network more than four years ago. More than a million people are now using mobile phones in North Korea, where the network now covers most major cities, according to Orascom.

Chinese-made Huawei cellphones sold by Koryolink are not cheap, with the most basic model costing about $150, and the governments restricts North Koreans from phoning abroad or foreigners from their cellphones. Still, mobile phones have become a must-have accessory among not only the elite in Pyongyang but also the middle class in cities such as Kaesong and Wonsan.

Foreigners, meanwhile, can now purchase SIM cards at the airport or at Koryolink shops for 50 euros ($70). Calls abroad range from 0.38 euros a minute to Switzerland and France and more than 5 euros a minute to the U.S. Calls to South Korea remain prohibited.

Starting next week, foreigners will be allowed to purchase monthly mobile Internet data plans for use with a USB modem or on mobile devices using their SIM cards. Prices for the service haven't been announced yet.

The expansion of cellphone and Internet services ? at least for foreigners ? comes as North Korea promotes the development of science and technology as a means of improving its moribund economy.

Late leader Kim Jong Il was revealed to have been a Mac user. His Macbook Pro, or a replica, is enshrined at the Kumsusan mausoleum where his body lies in state.

Current leader Kim Jong Un, meanwhile, was shown in a recent photo with a more mobile computing accessory: a smartphone.

All the fun of the Fairtrade Fortnight with films, football and food

The first products labelled Fairtrade appeared on supermarket shelves in 1994 and now over 4,500 products are licensed to hold the Fairtrade label.

This move has benefited over seven million people in Africa, Asia and Latin America improving conditions for farmers who were exporting goods to the UK.

Edinburgh was awarded a Fairtrade status in 2004 and celebrates this award across the City through Fairtrade Fortnight.

The programme runs from February 25 to March 10 bringing together the public with businesses, producers and campaigners to promote awareness and sales of Fairtrade products through music, film, comedy and food.

Lord Provost Donald Wilson said: ?The packed programme of events planned for the next two weeks is testament to how far Fairtrade Fortnight in Edinburgh has come since we were awarded Fairtrade status in 2004.

?Through this campaign and the Lord Provost's Fairtrade Awards we are aiming to encourage more and more people to become ethical shoppers whilst also recognising the fantastic contribution that individuals and businesses are making to Fair Trade throughout Edinburgh.?

This year's theme is based around 'Go Further this Fairtrade Fortnight' aiming to highlight the need to think about where our food comes from.

The campaign aims to enforce the idea of a sustainable food system which works for everyone and ensures farmers get a profitable livelihood from the crops that they grow.

Parenting with Love, Limits & Lessons | CTWorkingMoms

Feb 21, 2013 by Elise

12/18/2009: I met my son for the first time.? He was 3 1/2 years old and I was going in entirely blind to his life experiences, previous discipline, capabilities?everything.? Now that I have a nearly 3 1/2 year old daughter whom I?ve raised since infancy, I realize how much of a lifetime I had missed.? The?devastation?she would feel if she were plucked up tomorrow and dropped at a new doorstep makes my head spin.? And yet? He showed up with a smile.? Amazing.

Christmas '09 017

12/21/2009: I wrote, ?Well, we are about 4 days into our first placement and its going so much better than expected (I totally just jinxed myself).? We prepared ourselves for the worst but have been pleasantly surprised with age-appropriate, generally pleasant behavior!?? HA.?Foolish, foolish woman?

12/30/2009: Reality sets in.? My ears are bleeding from all the whining.? Tantrums are an hourly occurrence.? Every moment is a battle.

01/04/2010:? We are trapped in our house.? The fits he throws the second we enter a public space are like nothing I?ve ever seen before.? It?s become a safety concern (just ask my black eye) and we?ve decided we won?t be taking him out for a while.? I?m suffocating and scared.

1/11/2010:? After barely managing to schlep myself to work, a coworker cheerily asked me how my weekend was.? I stared at her blankly for a moment wondering how the answer?wasn?t?already written all over my baggy-eyed face?before answering with ?Well,?I survived?.

1/25/2010:? We tried to visit family today but cut the visit short when we started to worry about the screaming bothering the neighbors.? Well-intentioned?family member just shakes her head in disbelief saying, ?I had no idea it was this bad.?? As the tears well up in my eyes I respond, ?This is a good day.?? We go back home, exhausted and alone.

2/14/2010:? Our first Valentine?s Day as a family.? We push through with heart-shaped pancakes, pink milk,?and a walk to the park. ?I had planned to surprise my wife with a nice dinner after we got the kids to bed (if we got the kids to bed), but she turned in early after a particularly hateful?barrage?of words from him. ?He?s been doing this a lot lately and she is his favorite target.? So instead I hold her in our bed and we both cry.

2/16/2010: I write, ?As a parent, there is a lot I don?t know.? I don?t know much of?his history.? I don?t?know what their future will hold.? I don?t know the dark demons that live in my little boy?s heart.? I don?t always know the best way to respond to behavior challenges. ?I don?t know if I say the right things or if I do the right things.???Hell, I don?t even know how long I?ll be able to call myself a parent.?But, what I do know is that my love is stronger than his anger.? And that?s all I need to know to get up tomorrow and do it all again.?

3/11/2010: His mom has been missing a lot of visits lately and that has thrown him into even more of a tailspin than usual.? I?m his new target and he has found my?Achilles?heel: peeing.purposely.on.everything.? Nothing gets my blood boiling more than this disgusting new habit.? I can?t take it for one more second.

3/12/2010:?During a rage he screamed at me in his angriest voice: ?I LOVE YOU!!?? And then I?m reminded.? He?s mad that he loves me.? He?doesn?t?want to have foster moms.? He?doesn?t?want to continually fall in love with caregivers just to be ripped away.? He wants to love his mom and have her love him back.? I still have no fucking clue what I?m doing, but I get it.

4/4/2010: Easter.? Our first day in nearly 4 months without a fit/rage/crying/peeing/major incident of any kind.? I feel a crack in my cloak of self-doubt.? You know what?? I think we can do this.? Of course, I?ve been saying that incessantly this whole time, but today my heart starts to believe it.

Easter '10 078

4/16/2010: For the first time, I attend a support group meeting for foster parents because, shit, I need something.? Just so happens a woman is there?to give?us a presentation on a parenting and discipline strategy called Cooperative Kids? based on the book Love, Limits & Lessons by Bill Corbett.? I quickly googled it to see if it would be worth my time to stay.? At this point I feel like I?ve read just about every parenting book out there, but something about this one caught my attention.? I liked the fact that the love came first.? In so many of those other books (including others with ?love? in the title), discipline is the primary goal and love the second, but that wasn?t going to work for me?not for this kid.? Amidst the sea of all that I didn?t know, I always knew that love and attachment trumped all.? There would be no healing, controlling, or disciplining until this child trusted me and was filled to the brim with love.? I bought the book and read it cover to cover in one night.? The next day I started implementing its strategies and I haven?t looked back since.

6/18/2010:? We celebrate 6 months as a family.??We have made it through the darkness.? There are still struggles and temper tantrums, but life has become manageable again.? In fact, we took our first family vacation and knowing where he had been 5 months earlier, I am so proud of my son.??I enjoyed him and his company and that brought me tears of relief.

Ptown 2010 259

7/26/2010: In an email to a friend: ?And that?s?when it occurred?to me that I?m not parenting the same?boy I was 6 months ago.? The pendulum has swung and the good far far outweighs the bad.? Man, I love that kid.?

8/23/2010:??He and I were winding down in a snuggle on the couch.? He got quiet and furrowed his brow when he asked, ?Do you like being my mommy?? I?couldn?t?answer right away because his words had taken my breath.? Instead I kissed him on his forehead and breathed in the smell of his freshly washed hair.

?I like it more than anything else in the world.? Being your mommy is the best thing?I?ve?ever done.?

?Do you like it more than chocolate ice cream??

?Way more.?

9/12/2010:?Epic meltdown at church moments before we were supposed to head to a picnic complete with running wildly into oncoming traffic.? This is the part of the?roller coaster?ride that I find particularly intolerable.? The fact that?we?ve?gone months without a public tantrum, then all of a sudden, here it is again.? It feels like such a lack of progress ? it feels like such a failure.? I really wanted to go to that picnic.

11/26/2010:?We welcome our third child.? A complete shock and?surprise?to everyone leaving my son the same 2 hours to prepare as the rest of us.? He is incredible.? Happy, unthreatened, and loving.? These girls won the big brother jackpot.

Mehahlea 077

6/6/2011:?We?re all hanging out at the playground, swinging high and happily chatting, when my wife asked, ?How did we get such a sweet boy??? He answered matter-of-factly as if we asked him the color of the sky: ?You teached me.?

2/21/2013: My son is incredible. ?He is happy, thriving, and never stops talking. ?He is kind, respectful, cooperative, and has a noticeable appreciation for the boundaries and consequences present in his life. ?He?s also a high-energy emotional kid who struggles at time with keeping a quiet body, listening ears, and calm expression of feelings. ?In sum? He?s an awesomely typical 6 year old boy. ?I love him so much, but even more, I really like him. ?There were times I feared never being able to say that.

ramon

Of course time, maturity, and healing had a lot to do with his growth and success, but I also give a lot of credit to finding a plan that worked in?Love, Limits & Lessons. ?It was here that I learned that the tantrums and misbehavior are his, not mine. I don?t own them. I?m not burdened by them ? he is.? This relates to one of my primary parenting rules: I can?t control my child, nor do I want to.? The only person I can control is this world is me.? My job is to guide and to teach, but he is his own individual spirit in control of his body and mind.? There is no power struggle because I freely give him all the power he needs and deserves ? but that also means he gets the responsibility of his actions. ?How freeing that philosophy is. ?Also, disengaging myself from the hate and negativity made it that much easier for the love to flow in.

So, naturally, whenever I?m asked for a recommendation on a parenting book, this is my go-to. ?It?s a quick read, funny and real. ?Along with the broader philosophical discussions, it offers concrete solutions for common problems. ?It provided me with an effective parenting voice that felt comfortable and nurturing.

Now here?s the really exciting news?I?ve connected with the Connecticut-based author and one week from today, you?ll have the opportunity to win a copy of the book to check out for yourself! ?Not only that, but Bill Corbett has agreed to field some parenting questions from our CT Working Moms audience!

What is your biggest struggle right now? ?Need advice on meal times, bed times, homework, dating?? This is your opportunity to get some advice from a fantastic parenting expert! ?Leave your question in the comments below and check back next Thursday for a great parenting discussion and giveaway!

HTC One early hands-on!

The HTC One launch event has just begun, but we've already got our first hands-on! Not a lot of details at this point, as the phone is still being announced on-stage, but a kindly gentlemen sitting in the audience who had a handset let us try his out for a few moments. Early impressions are that the phone feels great in the hand, very thin and very well made. The UI customizations, meanwhile, are another story entirely. Very Windows Phone-like, we're not sure traditional Android fans are going to love it. Enjoy the pics for now, we'll be back with more details soon!

Update: Here's our full, formal hands-on!

Titanium Alloy and Android Resources problem

Hi!

I'm currently taking my first steps with Alloy, but I am experiencing several problems with the Android resources.

I've got this folder structure:

app - assets -- android --- images ---- high ---- medium ---- low
And I reference images like this:
"#play":{     height: Ti.UI.SIZE,     width: Ti.UI.SIZE,     backgroundColor: "transparent",     image: "/play.png",     touchEnabled: true,     top: "30dp" }
I can see that the build process copies the images into the according Android folders res/drawable-hdpi, res/drawable-mdpi ... whereas the filename has some kind of random string added to it.

The problem is the images won't show up in the Android app, neither in emulator nor on the real device.

When I run it on the emulator I get messages like: "Max retries reached, giving up decoding image source: file:///android_asset/Resources/play.png"

I don't think this is the right path to search for the images, is it?

I am on Titanium 3.1.

Thanks for your help.

Children with auditory processing disorder may now have more treatment options

Feb. 19, 2013 ? Several Kansas State University faculty members are helping children with auditory processing disorder receive better treatment.

Debra Burnett, assistant professor of family studies and human services and a licensed speech-language pathologist, started the Enhancing Auditory Responses to Speech Stimuli, or EARSS, program. The Kansas State University Speech and Hearing Center offers the program, which uses evidence-based practices to treat auditory processing disorder.

Other Kansas State University faculty members involved in the program include Melanie Hilgers, clinic director and instructor in family studies and human services, and Robert Garcia, audiologist and program director for communication sciences and disorders. Several graduate students also are involved.

Auditory processing disorder affects how the brain processes language. Children and adults with auditory processing disorder have normal hearing sensitivity and will pass a hearing test, but their brains do not appropriately process what they hear.

"A lot of therapy targets these skills," Burnett said. "It's almost like relaying the road in the brain that deals with auditory information. For whatever reason, it didn't develop properly, so the therapy is about reworking these skills."

Burnett and collaborators started the program after attending a conference for the Kansas State Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The conference included a workshop on ways to incorporate speech-language pathologists into therapy for auditory processing disorder.

"In the past, it has kind of been in the domain of the audiologist to do all of the testing and all of the therapy," Burnett said. "Speech-language pathologists have been involved in some augmentative therapy, but not in the core therapy. That is all starting to change."

Last summer Burnett and her colleagues decided to start a Kansas State University therapy program that involves speech-language pathologists. Seven children were involved in the program during the summer, two children were involved during the fall semester and one child has continued the program during the spring semester. The children all have been diagnosed with auditory processing disorder. They range in age from 8 to 14 years old and were from north-central Kansas.

Before children begin the program, Burnett performs a pretest to determine their needs and the best way to approach therapy with them. A graduate student clinician, supervised by a licensed speech-language pathologist, meets with the children one hour per week to participate in activities that improve their auditory processing skills. Some of the activities include:

* Phonemic training to address the brain's ability to process speech sounds.

* Words in Noise training to address the brain's ability to process speech with background noise.

* Phonemic synthesis training to address the brain's ability to process speech sounds across words.

At the end of the program, Burnett performs a posttest to identify changes. The researchers have seen positive results so far: All of the children who participated in the posttest showed improvements in the treated areas. In the areas that the researchers did not treat, the children showed no change but also did not get worse.

"Based on these results, our program is showing early signs of being effective," Burnett said.

Because many of the children also get support at school, the researchers have been working with schools to help teachers and therapists improve treatment with students.

"Instead of giving general guidelines to schools, we are able to talk about the children's specific needs and strengths," Burnett said. "We are able to convey very specific strategies and ideas because we have gotten to know the children and have seen their progress."

As a result of the program, speech-language pathologists are able to take a more active role in therapy. Auditory processing disorder will still need to be diagnosed by an audiologist, Burnett said, but now speech therapists can be more actively involved in administering and interpreting interventions.

"There is a direct benefit to the children diagnosed because of the service," Burnett said. "I think it's a large role of a university to get the latest practices out to the community. It fills the need for the population itself, but also for our field to get more people involved."

Additionally, Kansas State University now is able to offer the therapy to residents and children of north-central Kansas. Previously, the closest therapy option was located in Kansas City.

The researchers plan to continue offering and fine-tuning the therapy. They currently are preparing the program results for a research publication.

Photographer: Baldwin used racial slur

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

AP file

Alec Baldwin and wife HIlaria.

Actor Alec Baldwin says he did not use a racial slur in a Sunday morning confrontation with a photographer that landed on the cover of the New York Post.??

"This is completely false," Baldwin's spokesman?Matthew Hiltzik told TODAY of the alleged racial slur.?

"The claim of racist remarks is one of the most outrageous things I?ve heard in my life," said Baldwin.?

According to the Post, reporter Tara Palmeri and G. N. Miller, a former policeman turned photographer, approached Baldwin Sunday morning as he was walking his dogs in New York, asking about a lawsuit filed against Baldwin's pregnant wife, yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas Baldwin.

The Post reports that Baldwin grabbed Palmeri's arm and told her, "I want to choke you to death," then used a racial slur to refer to Miller, who is black.

The Post ran a photograph of Baldwin holding Palmeri's arm as she holds a small tape recorder, and reports that Palmeri played an audio recording of the conversation for the police.

Baldwin told Gothamist that he felt the photographer deliberately "banged into me with his shoulder." The actor denied using racial slurs, saying "I don't think I've ever uttered a racial epithet to someone in my lifetime."

Police confirm that Baldwin and Miller filed complaints against each other after the incident.

Baldwin has been tweeting about the incident, writing in one message, "That's kind of magical thinking, isn't it? The Post accusing me of racism?" The Post reports that Baldwin removed some of his earlier tweets about the incident, including one in which he reportedly twice called Miller a "crackhead."

Baldwin also tweeted, "I?find it ironic that my foundation's last grant was $50,000 to the Arthur Ashe Learning Center." Ashe, the only black tennis player ever to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open, passed away in 1993.
