'Record year' for ivory seizures

More elephant tusks were seized in 2011 than in any year since 1989, when the ivory trade was banned, international wildlife trade group Traffic says.

The group said elephants have had a "horrible year", with 23 tonnes of ivory seized - representing at least 2,500 dead animals.

Trade in ivory was banned in 1989 to save elephants from extinction.

But it has continued illegally because of huge demand in Asia, where it is used to make decorative objects.

"The escalating large ivory quantities involved in 2011 reflect both a rising demand in Asia and the increasing sophistication of the criminal gangs behind the trafficking," said a statement from Traffic, which monitors the trade in wildlife products.

"Most illegal shipments of African elephant ivory end up in either China or Thailand."

Shifting smuggling routes

The group said there had been at least 13 large seizures of ivory this year, amounting to more than 23 tonnes, compared to six last year of less than 10 tonnes.

"In 23 years of compiling ivory seizure data... this is the worst year ever for large ivory seizures. 2011 has truly been a horrible year for elephants," Traffic's elephant expert Tom Milliken said.

Traffic said the smugglers appear to have shifted away from using air to sea - in early 2011, three of the large scale ivory seizures were at airports but later in the year most were found in sea freight.

"The only common denominator in the trafficking is that the ivory departs Africa and arrives in Asia, but the routes are constantly changing, presumably reflecting where the smugglers gamble on being their best chance of eluding detection," it said.

In six of the large 2011 seizures, Malaysia was a transit country in the supply chain, Traffic said.

In the most recent case on 21 December, Malaysian authorities seized hundreds of African elephant tusks worth about $1.3 million (?844,000) that were being shipped to Cambodia.

The ivory was hidden in containers of handicrafts from Kenya's Mombasa port, Traffic said.

Mr Milliken said despite the seizures, there were generally few arrests.

"I fear the criminals are winning," he said.

Some environmental campaigners say the decision to allow some southern African countries, whose elephants populations are booming, to sell their stockpiles of ivory has fuelled the illegal trade.

Those countries - South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe - however, deny this and argue they should be rewarded for looking after their elephant populations.

Nanotechnology: The art of molecular carpet-weaving

ScienceDaily (Dec. 29, 2011) ? Stable two-dimensional networks of organic molecules are important components in various nanotechnology processes. However, producing these networks, which are only one atom thick, in high quality and with the greatest possible stability currently still poses a great challenge. Scientists from the Excellence Cluster Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM) have now successfully created just such networks made of boron acid molecules. The current issue of the scientific journal ACSnano reports on their results.

Even the costliest oriental carpets have small mistakes. It is said that pious carpet-weavers deliberately include tiny mistakes in their fine carpets, because only God has the right to be immaculate. Molecular carpets, as the nanotechnology industry would like to have them are as yet in no danger of offending the gods. A team of physicists headed by Dr. Markus Lackinger from the Technische Universit?t M?nchen (TUM) und Professor Thomas Bein from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit?t M?nchen (LMU) has now developed a process by which they can build up high-quality polymer networks using boron acid components.

The "carpets" that the physicists are working on in their laboratory in the Deutsches Museum M?nchen consist of ordered two-dimensional structures created by self-organized boron acid molecules on a graphite surface. By eliminating water, the molecules bond together in a one-atom thick network held together solely by chemical bonds -- a fact that makes this network very stable. The regular honey-comb-like arrangement of the molecules results in a nano-structured surface whose pores can be used, for instance, as stable forms for the production of metal nano-particles.

The molecular carpets also come in nearly perfect models; however, these are not very stable, unfortunately. In these models the bonds between the molecules are very weak -- for instance hydrogen bridge bonds or van der Waals forces. The advantage of this variant is that faults in the regular structure are repaired during the self-organization process -- bad bonds are dissolved so that proper bonds can form.

However, many applications call for molecular networks that are mechanically, thermally and/or chemically stable. Linking the molecules by means of strong chemical bonds can create such durable molecule carpets. The down side is that the unavoidable weaving mistakes can no longer be corrected due to the great bonding strength.

Markus Lackinger and his colleagues have now found a way to create a molecular carpet with stable covalent bonds without significant weaving mistakes. The method is based on a bonding reaction that creates a molecular carpet out of individual boron acid molecules. It is a condensation reaction in which water molecules are released. If bonding takes place at temperatures of a little over 100?C with only a small amount of water present, mistakes can be corrected during weaving. The result is the sought after magic carpet: molecules in a stable and well-ordered one-layer structure.

Markus Lackinger's laboratory is located in the Deutsches Museum M?nchen. There he is doing research at the Chair of Prof. Wolfgang Heckl (TUM School of Education, TU M?nchen). Prof. Bein holds a Chair at the Department of Chemistry at the LMU. The research was conducted in collaboration with Prof. Paul Knochel's work group (LMU) and Physical Electronics GmbH, with funding by the Excellence Cluster Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM) and the Bavarian Research Foundation (BFS).

A Delta flight carrying 33 passengers and three crew members landed safely Wednesday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

A spokesman for regional jet operator Pinnacle Airlines says the main passenger door was making a noise. He says the flight was cancelled and passengers were booked into hotels because the crew had reached the maximum time allowed to remain on duty. The passengers are expected to fly to Quebec on Thursday.

Earlier in the day a Chicago-bound United Airlines regional jet made an emergency landing at the two-runway Burlington International Airport shortly after takeoff.

United spokesman Rahsaan Johnson says a cockpit indicator light erroneously alerted the flight crew to smoke in the cargo hold. He says passengers flew in a different plane to Chicago and landed safely.

Vikings expect Peterson back for start of 2012 (AP)

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. ? The athletic abilities of star running back Adrian Peterson led the Minnesota Vikings to give him a seven-year, $100 million contract extension before the season started.

Now, they hope his recuperative abilities are just as good and he is able to live up to being the highest-paid running back in the NFL.

Minnesota expects Peterson to be recovered from left knee surgery for two torn ligaments in time to start the 2012 season.

"We expect most people to recover from this injury in eight to nine months and instead of comparing Adrian to any other player at any level that's had an anterior cruciate ligament, and they happen every day, I would really like Adrian to stand on his own merit because Adrian, I feel, is very unique," Vikings head trainer Eric Sugarman said Monday.

"Adrian has a great work ethic. Adrian has the DNA to heal quickly, which he has shown in the past. He certainly will have the desire and the mental toughness to be able to get through the rehab process, which will take months and months, as you know. So, I think if anyone can get better quickly and safely in that time period, it would be Adrian Peterson."

Peterson tore his ACL and MCL when he was hit in the side of the knee by Washington Redskins safety DeJon Gomes in the third quarter of Saturday's 33-26 win at Washington. An MRI on Saturday evening revealed the ligament tears and meniscus damage, and Peterson will undergo surgery within the next seven to 10 days.

Backup Toby Gerhart, who started three games earlier this season when Peterson was out with a high ankle sprain, will start Sunday in the season-finale against the Chicago Bears. A second-round pick in 2010, Gerhart has filled in well for Peterson and notched the first 100-yard rushing game of his career with 109 yards on 11 carries Saturday. But the Vikings expect Gerhart's time as the starter to be short-lived.

"He sets his goals extremely high and he's one of those guys who, when he puts his mind to it, there's no reason to ever doubt that he can achieve what he sets his mind to," Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier said of Peterson. "We're looking forward to his attacking this rehab like he's attacked every offseason, to come back and play and be even better than he was before. I know with Eric and our medical staff, they're going to do everything they can to get him back on the field and ready to go when we line up in that first football game next season."

Gerhart's emergence over the past month at least offers optimism if Peterson has to miss extended time next season.

Gerhart has had the top three rushing days of his career in the past four weeks. On his first carry after Peterson left Saturday's game, Gerhart showed some big-play ability of his own, busting free for a 67-yard run, the longest of his short career.

Believing Peterson will be ready for the first game of 2012 and knowing Gerhart is available if needed, Frazier said the team wouldn't change its run-first offensive approach.

"One of things about Adrian's absence earlier in the season, we had a chance to get Toby some extended snaps and we really haven't altered the offense by any means," Frazier said. "Toby has done a very good job in Adrian's absence. Did a great job (Saturday) of stepping in and performing and rushing for over 100 yards. So we really haven't had to alter things. We really don't plan to. We look forward to eventually getting Adrian back on the field, but we don't think we have to really alter the offense."

Health Tip: Wear Your Seat Belt During Pregnancy (HealthDay)

(HealthDay News) -- Wearing a seat belt is particularly important during pregnancy, when you're protecting for two.

The American Academy of Family Physicians offers these suggestions for moms-to-be while traveling in the car:

  • Wear your seat belt properly, with the lap belt beneath your belly and the shoulder strap positioned between the breasts and to the side of the belly.
  • Move your seat back as far as possible if you have airbags. Tilt the seat to give your belly more space.
  • If you aren't driving, sit in the back seat.
  • Always see your doctor immediately after a car accident, even if you don't feel like you are hurt.

Sexual assault reports up at U.S. military academies: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The U.S. Department of Defense said on Tuesday that there was a rise in reports of sexual assault at the nation's military academies in the most recent school year and announced new policies to help victims.

The "Annual Report on Sexual Harassment and Violence at Military Service Academies" found that during the 2010-11 year there were 65 reports of sexual assaults involving cadets and midshipmen, up from 41 in the prior year.

To help address the jump, the academies are implementing two new policies.

Service members who have been victims of sexual assault will now be able to request an expedited transfer from their units. The military will now also retain records of sexual assaults longer -- in some cases as long as 50 years.

"We know that the military academies are similar to college campuses around the country in that sexual harassment and assault are challenges that all faculty, staff and students need to work to prevent," said Major General Mary Kay Hertog, director of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office.

"However, when it does occur, we owe it to those who have been victimized, and to every cadet and midshipman, to do everything possible to provide needed support and to hold those who commit sexual assault appropriately accountable."

As part of the review process, Department of Defense officials visited the U.S. Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy and reviewed academy policies and procedures. They also held focus groups.

Officials found most academy programs fulfilled or in some cases surpassed existing policies and directives, but Hertog said they have also identified areas for improvement.

Hackers target US security think tank (AP)

LONDON ? Hackers on Sunday claimed to have stolen 200 GB of e-mails and credit card data from United States security think tank Stratfor, promising a weeklong Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Members of the loose hacking movement known as "Anonymous" posted a link on Twitter to what it said was Stratfor's secret client list ? including the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, Goldman Sachs and MF Global.

"Not so private and secret anymore?," the group taunted in a message on the microblogging site.

Anonymous said it was able to get credit details, in part, because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them ? an easy-to-avoid blunder which ? if true ? would be a major embarrassment for any security company.

Stratfor said in an email to members that it had suspended its servers and email after learning that its website had been hacked.

"We have reason to believe that the names of our corporate subscribers have been posted on other web sites," said the email, passed on to The Associated Press. "We are diligently investigating the extent to which subscriber information may have been obtained."

The email, signed by Stratfor Chief Executive George Friedman, said the company is "working closely with law enforcement to identify who is behind the breach."

"Stratfor's relationship with its members and, in particular, the confidentiality of their subscriber information, are very important to Stratfor and me," Friedman wrote.

Stratfor's website was down midday Sunday, with a banner saying "site is currently undergoing maintenance."

Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" ? a reference to spinoff and fellow troublemakers Lulz Security ? Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.

The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.

"They took money I did not have," he told The Associated Press in an email. "I think why me? I am not rich."

Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on companies such as Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, as well as others in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

Stephen Colbert will sponsor South Carolina's GOP primary (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? "The Colbert Nation Super PAC Presidential Primary" -- can you picture it in big, bold neon letters?

The Comedy Central funnyman is continuing his fight to sponsor the South Carolina GOP presidential primary, offering half a million dollars to cover the counties' "shortfall" in a guest editorial in The State.

State officials have been fighting over who should fund the primary, which is the first of the season in the South. Colbert, a Charleston native, has offered to help out through his Colbert Super PAC.

He formed the PAC earlier this year to satirize the country's campaign finance system, which became even more divisive after the Supreme Court's ruling in the Citizens United case.

Colbert -- who, in 2007, attempted to run for president, but only in South Carolina -- previously offered the South Carolina GOP the money it needed if it would name the contest after him. The GOP denied Colbert's olive branch but assented to putting the naming rights on the ballot as a referendum if Colbert promised to contribute.

The South Carolina Supreme Court rained on that parade by eliminating all referendum questions from the ballot.

Now Colbert is asking for one more chance.

"As a proud son of South Carolina I must address recent unsubstantiated rumors published in The State that I, Stephen Colbert, tried to buy the naming rights to the 2012 Republican primary," he wrote. "First, never trust anything in a newspaper -- except this column, and possibly 'Mallard Filmore.' And second, these outrageous and scurrilous rumors border on libel, even if they are, technically, true. I don't want to talk about it."

He demands just two things: "that you support the Democrats' petition to get my referendum back on the ballot, and that you grant me the pre-negotiated naming rights, which, I think we can all agree, you now own. To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, 'You paid for that microphone!'"

Google TV and Apple TV Could Change Cable TV for the Good (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Streaming video is a big deal when it comes to mobile devices. Tablet computers are almost designed with the capability in mind, and many smartphones have the application as well. In fact the popularity of streaming video is putting the squeeze on traditional cable companies and the media companies that create the television shows, but does anyone have an advantage in the race for consumer dollars?

According to the Wall Street Journal, television revenue from advertising, cable subscriptions and the like tally around $150 billion per year, which means there is serious money up for grabs. However, there is little doubt that if Apple and Google have anything to say about television, the entertainment landscape will change in the coming years, especially due to the popularity of mobile devices.

Business Insider reports cable TV should take Google TV seriously. The article mentions the $100 million investment Google is making in original programming for YouTube. However, Netflix is also getting in on the exclusive programming game getting ready to revive "Arrested Development," according to the Los Angeles Times. Plus, The Week is reporting a lot of interesting features on the new Apple TV that could increase the streaming content competition.

Whether or not viewers will shift to the original programming offered by YouTube and Netflix is an interesting question; however, users need something to watch for free (OK, Netflix has a subscription fee) on all those new shiny devices. Television is changing, and there is room for new shows that could start to affect the traditional television viewing process, which is getting home and turning on the TV to see what is on. The change is that now viewers will know what is on, and be able to watch it on several different devices with no additional cost, and that should shake cable companies to the core.

Madonna Fan Arrested For 'Gimme All Your Luvin' Leak

Recordings of the new song, featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., found in 31-year-old's belongings after leak was traced to Spain, police say.

Just over a month after a demo of Madonna's "Gimme All Your Luvin" was leaked online, police have arrested a 31-year-old fan. After the icon's lawyers traced the leak to Spain, the man, whose full name has not been released, was arrested in the northern city of Zaragoza. Police, who have only confirmed the suspect's initials as J.M.R., describe the man as "a big Madonna fan" and say they found recordings of the song in his belongings.

The track, which features Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., was leaked without M.I.A.'s vocals. When it surfaced in early November, Madonna's longtime manager Guy Oseary voiced his displeasure via Twitter, writing, "The plan was for new music to come out in the new year. I'm very happy with the positive reaction to the demo, but we are very upset with whoever leaked the song! We are asking that the fans please help us police any more leaks. We have a lot in store for you. But please respect the process." An unhappy Madge also weighed in, via Oseary, saying, "My true fans wouldn't do this. Whoever is responsible for this leak, we ask that you please stop!"

Earlier this month, both Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. tweeted saucy details from the set of the video shoot for the song. Minaj gushed about kissing Madonna, while M.I.A. teased that they had a "3sum."

No word on when the video will be released, but Madonna's upcoming as-yet-untitled new album is expected to drop in the spring of 2012. It will feature production from Ray of Light producer William Orbit. Madonna is also slated to perform at the Super Bowl in February, which coincides with the release of her film "W.E."

Do you agree with Madonna that "true fans" wouldn't leak the song? Share your thoughts below!

Some more young actors have also signed on to play some of Ender's (Asa Butterfield) class mates: Aramis Knight, Moises Arias, Jimmy "Jax" Pinchak, Suraj Parthasarathy, Conor Carroll and Khylin Rhambo. Variety have the lowdown on which characters they will all play..
Ford will play Colonel Hyram Graff, who's in charge of training the young male recruits at an elite military academy. Breslin will play Valentine Wiggin, Ender's older sister, while Steinfeld will play Petra Arkanian, Ender's ally and trusted right hand.

Knight, who previously appeared in Hood's "Rendition," will play Bean, the smallest new recruit; Arias ("Hannah Montana") will play Bonzo, the commander of Salamander Army; Pinchak ("Let Me In") will play Peter Wiggin, Ender's brilliant but tortured older brother; and Parthasarathy will play Alai, the first recruit to befriend Ender.

Carroll ("Away We Go") will play Bernard, the leader of the new recruits who bullies Ender at first; and Rhambo will play Dink, a brainy member of Rat Army.

Well, that's some gang of new cast members. If you haven't read the novel it involves the recruiting of extremely gifted children (the most gifted of which is the title character Ender Wiggin) by the government to help destroy an insect-like alien race. I was not very impressed by Ford's last outing taking on aliens so hopefully this will be a return to form for a man who has played some of the most iconic characters in movie history.

Cops: Remains identified as missing NJ woman

By NBCNewYork.com

Police have identified the remains found on Monday in a Long Island marsh as those of Shannan Gilbert, a New Jersey woman who went missing in May 2010.

The cause of death has not yet been determined. ?

The set of skeletal remains were found in the oceanfront marsh where police believed Gilbert, a prostitute, got lost and drowned in the middle of the night after fleeing a client's home in a nearby gated community.

Complete coverage from NBCNewYork.com

The remains were discovered about one-fourth of a mile from where several of Gilbert's belongings were located two weeks ago.

Police believed that the location of her belongings in relation to the remains indicate she may have been trying to run towards the lights on Ocean Parkway, a nearby road, but could not find her way out of the marsh.

The search for Gilbert more than a year ago led to police finding the bodies of several others in the deserted beachfront, who they believe to be sex workers like Gilbert.

Suffolk County police have said they believe a single serial killer is responsible for the 10 victims, but theorize that Gilbert drowned and was not slain by the killer.

Suffolk County DA Thomas Spota, though, said Thursday that he disputes the theory that only one person is involved in the death of the 10 victims.

He insisted there is no evidence all the victims are associated with the "sex trade," as the police commissioner has suggested. ? The Suffolk County Police Department Homicide Squad is continuing the investigation.?

Report says western states edging toward recovery (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? The West is recovering faster than the nation as a whole, but employment across the region remained far below pre-recession levels and the housing market showed few signs of improvement, according to an economic report released Thursday.

The report prepared by Brookings Mountain West researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas focused on economic growth in 10 metropolitan areas spread across Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Idaho.

Overall, the region saw a modest 0.3 percent growth in employment in the quarter ending in September, compared to the national rate of 0.1 percent, the study found. Utah, Colorado and New Mexico ? states that have built broad economic bases ? struggled the least, researchers said. In Arizona and Nevada, the housing collapse continued to limit job growth.

"We don't have a robust, steady recovery yet," said Mark Muro, policy director for the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. "The real estate crack up continues to have a severe influence on the places that struggle with it."

In all, every metropolitan area lagged behind pre-recession employment levels, with Phoenix and Las Vegas experiencing the sharpest differences. Job levels languished 10.8 and 13.4 percent below their respective pre-recession peaks.

"The road to recovery remains long and uncertain," the report noted.

Still, there was enough employment growth in the past year to drive down the unemployment rate in every major metropolitan area singled out by the report. Utah and New Mexico had the lowest unemployment rates, while Las Vegas had the highest at 13.6 percent.

Leading the recovery were Utah's Ogden and Provo, Albuquerque in New Mexico, and Phoenix. Boise and Las Vegas showed modest signs, but Tucson, Ariz., and Colorado Springs were still struggling, according to the report. Ogden and Provo saw employment rise by 1.5 percent, and Idaho's Boise saw a 1 percent increase in jobs.

Employment grew by less than 1 percent in Phoenix, Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City and Tucson.

Among the areas that faced a difficult quarter, such as Denver and Albuquerque, job growth in Las Vegas stagnated ? a sign of Nevada's highest-in-the-nation unemployment rate. In Albuquerque and Denver, job growth fell slightly.

Manufacturing gains drove the jobs numbers in Provo and Ogden, while government expansion helped Boise grow its work force. Conversely, government layoffs contributed to economic woes in Colorado Springs, Las Vegas, Albuquerque and Denver. Production levels remained depressed in Tucson, Boise, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

The housing market offered few signs of recovery. Prices across the region remained significantly below last year's totals.

Still, the report highlighted some positive milestones. Prices remained stagnant or improved in eight of the metropolitan areas for the first time since the recession began in 2007. In Las Vegas and Tucson, home values continued to fall, but at a much slower rate than in previous quarters.

In the latest sign of hardship for Sin City, prices there saw the biggest drop from last year, at 19 percent. In all, Las Vegas home prices have dropped by nearly 65 percent since 2006. The steep fall means home prices are unlikely to recover in Las Vegas any time soon, according to the report. Nevada tops the nation in foreclosures, with vacant homes dominating many neighborhoods.

"A lot of people bought five or six houses strictly as an investment," said Mike Young, president of the Nevada Association of Realtors. "People just walked away. The values are too upside-down."

Hard-hit Tucson, Boise and Phoenix also will not see improved home prices in the foreseeable future, the researchers concluded.

"They have high foreclosures, they had massive real estate and construction employment that crashed and that kind of crack up has proven to be toxic to places," Muro said.

Business leaders called the report's findings accurate. In Tucson, where some of the major employers include national banks, health centers and the University of Arizona, officials are trying to promote higher education and attract more technology companies to the region to expand its work force. But the recovery remains weak.

"The Sun Belt markets have just been hammered by the mortgage meltdown and everything having to do with this economy," said Michael Varney, president/CEO of the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.

A Fond Farewell to Gizmodo Gallery: Virtual Tours, Pancake Records, and More [Video]

Wh-wh-who-whoa! What just happened? A couple of us at Giz just woke up from some Inception-like mind warp this week. Did we just overrun a Lower East Side gallery, fill it with the best, most coveted gear and exclusive exhibitions before clearing everything out, painting over the walls, and sweeping up mountains of broken glass, wire clippings, assorted lego pieces, and BLOOD? In just seven days? Madness. More »

Hey Sunny.

I WIN!

Anything you need me to do?

I am... to put it simply... Everything. Anything. You may happily pretend if you like, whatever you like. I can be the boy of your dreams or your best girl friend. I am that one chick that is not nearly as great as you but you hang around because you like the ego boost. I can be the guy who always stands off to one side and is great fun to talk to even though all his words are cryptic. I can listen. But please, don't stab me in the gut because the one thing I am for sure is human. And I can hurt.

@ Pie:

Hey! Um, yes. I'll talk to you over PM about some things, alright? But I do want you to start preparing a character. But not yet! Just get ideas! I still have things to do and edit.

@ Hidden:

If you want to be a Felon Student, do the General Information/Application first and then add the Felon Part. c:

Call to Ban Cell Phones While Driving Is Absurd (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is calling for a ban on the use of all cell phones, including hands free models for all drivers. According to tgdaily.com, it is because "more than 3,000 people lost their lives last year in distraction-related accidents." This study doesn't say if these are cell phone-related or not, but we'll assume they are. Should such a ban be enacted?

Why is it that we feel it is necessary to infringe on people's freedoms just because there are people out there who have no personal responsibility? Because 3,000 people have been involved in accidents, all drivers should not be punished equally. This is the wrong approach. This is no different than using a double load of buckshot to swat a fly, more than just the fly is going to suffer or not allowing McDonald's to put toys in their Happy Meals because some parents can't control what their children eat.

Government doesn't need to control everything its citizens do. Each time we let them intrude in one area, they will find something else to stick their nose into, using the argument that "We already are doing this so we might as well as do that." As an example, let's say we ban the use of cell phones because we don't want distracted drivers and then we find there is a lot of accidents caused by people who are changing their radio stations. Do we then ban the listening of radios in vehicles, citing the precedent of the banning of cell phones? After all, it is another distraction and people have been killed.

In the meantime, we continue to allow drivers who haven't taken a driving test in 50 or more years to renew their licenses without having to prove they are still capable of reacting in time to avoid accidents, or distinguishing the difference between the gas and brake pedals. Perhaps there haven't been enough deaths caused by elderly drivers yet to require action?

If 3,000 deaths is a lot, isn't even one death too much? Absolutely, but not when you compare it to the deaths of approximately 1.2 million people who are legally aborted every year right here in America, according to the Wiley Online Library. What are these deaths we seem to not be concerned about? This is the number of abortions performed in 2008. Where is the outcry on this?

Accuser's lawyers: Sandusky account 'unconvincing'

FILE - This Nov. 5, 2011 file photo provided by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General shows former Penn State football defensive coordinator Gerald "Jerry" Sandusky, who sexually abused a boy more than 100 times, then threatened his family to keep him quiet about the encounters, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 that details new accusations not included in criminal charges against him. (AP Photo/Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, File)

(AP) ? Former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky maintains he never sexually abused children and portrays himself in a New York Times interview as a father-like figure to the kids in his life.

The Times reported Saturday that Sandusky also insisted he never spoke with Joe Paterno about any allegations of misconduct.

"They've taken everything that I ever did for any young person and twisted it to say that my motives were sexual or whatever," Sandusky said. "I had kid after kid after kid who might say I was a father figure. And they just twisted that all."

Sandusky has been charged with 40 counts of molesting eight boys over 15 years and is free on bail while awaiting a preliminary hearing Dec. 13. A grand jury investigating Sandusky said in a report that some of the assaults occurred in the Penn State football showers, including a 2002 allegation in which a graduate assistant testified he saw Sandusky sodomizing a young boy.

University trustees fired Paterno ? major college football's winningest coach ? on Nov. 9, four days after charges were filed against Sandusky, amid mounting criticism that school leaders should have done more when allegations came to their attention.

During a lengthy interview with The Times at his lawyer's home, Sandusky painted a picture of chaotic but friendly scenes involving children he described as extended family at his State College, Pa., home. There were sleepovers, wrestling matches, and children playing with dogs at the house after football games.

The descriptions sharply contrast with the shocking allegations involving children outlined in the grand jury report, including oral and anal sex. One accusation, from 2000, describes a janitor walking into the assistant coaches' shower room and seeing Sandusky holding a boy "up against the wall and licking on him."

Three attorneys representing one of the alleged victims released a statement Saturday, with attorney Andrew Shubin calling Sandusky's comments "an entirely unconvincing denial and a series of bizarre explanations."

Sandusky told the newspaper he and Paterno never spoke about the alleged 2002 incident or a 1998 child molestation complaint investigated by Penn State campus police.

"I never talked to him about either one," Sandusky said. "That's all I can say. I mean, I don't know." He worked for Paterno for nearly 30 years.

Messages left Saturday by The Associated Press seeking comment from representatives for Paterno were not immediately returned.

Paterno testified before the grand jury that the graduate assistant told him in 2002 about the assault he had witnessed, and that he relayed the report to his superior, athletic director Tim Curley.

The graduate assistant, Mike McQueary, later met with Curley and Gary Schultz, a university vice president who oversaw campus police. But authorities said the allegation was not passed on to police or prosecutors.

Curley and Schultz are charged with failing to report the 2002 allegation and lying to the grand jury. Curley is on administrative leave, while Schultz has stepped down. Lawyers for both men have said their clients are innocent.

Prosecutors have said Paterno is not a target of the investigation.

Paterno's son, Scott Paterno, told the AP last month the first and only incident reported about Sandusky to Paterno was in 2002. Paterno has said in a statement that specific actions alleged to have occurred in the grand jury report were not relayed to him

Still, the state's top cop has criticized the way school leaders handled allegations and said Paterno and other officials had a moral responsibility to do more.

The 84-year-old Paterno initially announced his retirement effective at the end of the season, saying that the scandal was "one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more." The trustees fired him anyway, about 12 hours later.

Sandusky said that prosecutors have misconstrued his work with children. He described a family and work life that "could often be chaotic, even odd, one that lacked some classic boundaries between adults and children," the Times reported.

"It was, you know, almost an extended family," Mr. Sandusky said of his household's relationship with children from the charity he founded, The Second Mile. He characterized his experiences with children was close with as "precious times," and said the physical aspect of the relationships "just happened that way."

But Saturday's statement from one accuser's attorneys called such comments a "delusional rationalization."

"Pedophiles often horribly mischaracterize the abuse they perpetrate as something that their victims sought or benefited from," said Justine Andronici, who represents the same accuser as Shubin.

A third attorney, David Marshall, added that Sandusky's interview "goes a long way toward corroborating the victims' accounts" because Sandusky acknowledges "he 'wrestled' and showered alone with boys, gave them gifts and money, and travelled with them."

Allegations involving two victims occurred in Sandusky's home, according to the grand jury report.

"Victim One testified that Sandusky had a practice of coming into the basement room after he told Victim One that it was time to go to bed," the grand jury report said. "Victim One testified that Sandusky would 'crack his back,'" which was described in the report as Sandusky getting on to the bed and "rolling under the boy."

Sandusky is accused of mining the ranks of Second Mile to find underprivileged boys to abuse, which he says is false. He said that the charity never restricted his access to children until he became the subject of a criminal investigation in 2008.

He acknowledged that he regularly gave money to the disadvantaged boys at his charity, opened bank accounts for them and gave them gifts that had been donated to the charity.

"I tried to reward them sometimes with a little money in hand, just so that they could see something," he said. "But more often than not, I tried to set up, maybe get them to save the money, and I put it directly into a savings account established for them."

The paper said he grew most animated when talking about his relationships with children and most disconsolate when he spoke of Paterno and Penn State, and the upheaval caused by his indictment.

"I don't think it was fair," he is quoted as saying.

During the interview, Sandusky said his relationships and activities with Second Mile children caused some strain with Paterno. He told the paper he worried that having some children with him at hotels before games or on the sideline during games could have been regarded as a distraction by Paterno.
