Bits Blog: Why the Surface RT Failed and the iPad Did Not

At first glance, to most consumers, the Apple iPad and Microsoft Surface RT?tablet computer?look somewhat similar. They are both rectangular, have crisp screens and can boast a slick and clean design interface.

Yet on Thursday Microsoft announced that it was taking a $900 million?write-down?to?reflect?unsold inventory of the Surface RT.?That?s a stark comparison to Apple?s iPad, which continues to break record sales and has sold more than 100 million devices.

So why is one still succeeding while the other has failed? I have a theory. But it begins with a story.

I often?receive?tech support phone calls from family?members ? my dad, grandfather, cousins ??seeking help with a variety of computer problems. A few months ago I received such a call from my sister. She was having an issue with her iMac, and I started to walk her through a number of steps to diagnose the problem. Halfway though my narration, I asked her, ?O.K., what?s the computer doing now??

?My computer is restarting,? she said, triumphantly.

?Why, what happened?? I said, confused. ?Did it crash??

?No, I just got impatient so I unplugged it and plugged it back in.?

This is exactly one reason the Microsoft Surface RT failed to garner large sales: Impatience.

When Steve Ballmer, Microsoft?s chief executive,?announced the Surface tablets last year, he stood on stage and touted a number of new and exciting features to try to?separate the company?s offerings from the iPad. Among the new gizmos were additional ports, a?USB drive,?a microSD memory card slot, the ability to use a pen with the Surface Pro and a built-in flip-up stand. Pens sold by Microsoft also work with the Surface RT.

Just thinking about all those options is enough to make your head spin.

Today?s consumers don?t want options. They are impatient. They want to tear their new shiny gadget from the box and immediately start using it. They don?t have time to think about SD cards or USB drives or pens or flip stands.

The Surface RT didn?t allow that. Customers had to think about it.

Even the ads for the iPad and Surface RT are different. Apple simply shows the device, making the iPad the hero. Microsoft usually?unveils?snazzy ads that make the ads the hero, not the product.

Last year when the Surface RT was announced I wrote a post noting that one of the device?s new features did look appealing: the flap that doubled as a keyboard and might make it easier to type on a tablet. But Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst with?Forrester Research?who specializes in tablets, reminded me that too many options could easily overwhelm consumers.

?Microsoft will be its own worst enemy in this market,? Ms. Rotman Epps wrote at the time. ?More so than Apple or?Google. Apple gets this, and limits options to connectivity, storage and black? or white.?

Maybe it?s time for Microsoft to do the same thing. It could even skip the black or white option.

This post has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: July 19, 2013

An image associated with earlier version of this post misidentified one of Microsoft's tablets. It was the Surface Pro, not the Surface RT.

Tips For Cheap And Delicious Muffins From Scratch | Cooking Tips ...

It is a fact that people need to eat if they want to survive. But who is honestly interested in merely surviving? While it?s a great thing to eat something delicious, you really get a sense of pride when you can cook something delicious. To become a better cook, keep reading this article.

Get your ingredients squared away ahead of time. Before you start making your food, it is a good thing to have everything prepared. When you have a schedule as to how long you plan to be cooking, things can get a little stressful in the kitchen. Prepare early to avoid later stress.

TIP! Keep your spices and herbs in a dark, cool place. They will not taste as fresh if they are exposed to light or warmth.

If you?re trying to start making more food yourself, try looking at basic cookbooks in your local library or bookstore. Try different recipes until you come up with something that works for you.

Garlic is delicious; however the pungent aroma will get stuck on your hands. Rub your hands on the inside of a sink made of stainless steel after using garlic. Not only does this clean your hands, but it also stops the unwanted smells from getting into other foods you are about to handle.

Freeze sauces by pouring leftovers into ice cube trays. This makes it easier for you to make a quick meal which you can reheat at a later time. The sauce will be very edible after it comes out of the trays.

TIP! Slicing meat into thin even strips is easier when the meat is partially frozen. This is an especially strong technique for the meats called for in Asian meals.

Sometimes when someone?s grilling a hamburger, it will get stuck to the grill which makes it difficult to get off the grill. If, however, you brush the grill with oil, this will help prevent sticking.

Tofu and beans are great sources of protein that can easily be added to your diet. Both of these protein-rich foods are available at most grocery stores. A delicious alternative to meat is tofu pan fried with your favorite seasonings. Soak and cook the beans with herbs, seasonings, and bits of meat for a flavorful soup, burrito filling, dip or other protein-rich application.

If you are cooking a meal where seasoning gets added, don?t add it all at the beginning, add a little every couple of minutes instead. Doing this gives your food more flavor and you can get the most from your ingredients.

TIP! Quickly cooking vegetables allows them to retain much of their nutritional value. Slow cooking, and overcooking, vegetables will destroy their nutritional content and flavor.

If you are cooking with garlic, you want to use the freshest clove that you can find. Fresh garlic tastes much sweeter than does garlic that is not fresh. If your garlic is not shriveled up or soft and has a nice and firm skin, your garlic is fresh.

Make sure that you never use a wine in your food that you would not normally drink. Using a wine that you are not familiar with in your food can cause you not to like the flavor that?s produced. Look through your grocery store to find wines that are used specifically for cooking.

If you are often pressed for time when making dinner, try doing a little preparation work before hand, perhaps on the night before you plan to cook the dinner. You can cut your vegetables, prepare sauces, soup contents an many other things in the evening before you lay down for bed. With this done, you will have a major portion of the meal ready for the next step, which means less stress for you.

TIP! Make your meal preparation go more quickly by preparing some of the ingredients ahead of time. Look at your recipes before starting and clue in on the steps that can be done ahead of time without having any spoilage issues.

Keep your turkey leftovers after Thanksgiving. It is smarter to divide up the meat and seal it in airtight containers that you freeze. Doing this will keep the turkey fresh for several weeks, and it can be made into a sandwich or a salad whenever you want.

When cooking macaroni and cheese, you should follow the instructions to the letter. The perfectly cooked macaroni is very delicious with velvety cheese mixed with the pasta. A solid, wooden spoon is the perfect serving utensil. Spice it up with some type of pepper!

When you cook, wash dishes as you go along. Have one sink prepared for washing, hot and full of soap. Set the other aside for rinsing, warm and clean. Utensils and mixing bowls are easiest to cleaned directly after their use, and can be used again during the same meal preparation.

TIP! These will work as a sponge and soak up the water. Instead, get a wet, clean cloth and wipe off the mushroom by hand.

If you are planning a complex meal, reduce your stress by doing the prep the night before. Make sure you have all the necessary ingredients and chop and measure them in advance. The next day when you have to cook your meal, all you need to think about is assembling and cooking the dish.

It?s fun to learn how to cook more complicated meals. You may even enjoy eating more when you cook the food yourself. Absorb the tips below, and then add twists to make them your own. By doing this, your cooking skills will greatly improve and you will be the one people ask to bring food to different events.

Mom had concerns about 'cool' Plano gym coach

by CARLA WADE

WFAA

Posted on July 17, 2013 at 5:56 PM

PLANO ? Lyndsey Ryan Cox was known as "Coach Wes" to his students. He was also known to be an incredibly talented gymnast.

He was so talented, many parents trusted him with private lessons after hours.

Kids gravitated toward the charismatic young man.

On Monday, Cox was arrested in Plano facing charges of online solicitation of a minor for sex.

"He was definitely the 'cool' coach. All the boys loved him, and he ? in many cases ? was unprofessionally close," said a mother of two who asked WFAA to conceal the identities of her and her son.

The woman said last summer she pulled her nine-year-old boy off a team that Cox coached. She said his lack of boundaries with students worried her.

Stories circulated about his behavior with young boys in and outside of the gym, she said.

"He had boys alone a lot, which is unusual in the gymnastics world," the woman said. "It's not a normal thing for coaches to have young boys alone at their apartment. I was hearing stories of that happening, and it made me uncomfortable."

She said other parents raised similar concerns, but with no proof that the popular coach had done anything inappropriate, they were discouraged from reporting him to police.

Eventually, the mom who talked to WFAA said Cox was fired from the gym. Later, she said she learned he had been asked to leave other area gyms after similar suspicions were raised.

Cox was arrested Monday after the Plano Police Department received information Friday from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

According to the arrest warrant, the mother of a 14-year-old boy saw a Facebook message from his former gymnastics coach saying he wanted a picture of the boy in his underwear.

After further investigation, police obtained permission from the boy?s mother to assume his identity online and use his phone to obtain more evidence.

The mother we spoke with was relieved.

"I'm very glad that I followed my gut instinct and kept my kids away from him," she said.

Even so, this mom fears that many other parents did not follow their instincts, and as a result many children may have been a victim of Coach Wes.

We checked with several area gymnastics programs to see if Cox had worked there. Those that responded to our calls and e-mails said they had no record of his employment.

Police are also checking and encouraging possible victims to come forward and report any improper conduct to the department at 972-941-2580.

Suit: Florida accidentally banned all computers and cell phones

173291466

According to the plaintiffs in a Florida lawsuit, the state inadvertently banned all computer and cell phones in a hasty attempt to crack down on Internet gambling.

In an attempt to ban electronic gambling houses, House Bill 155 classifies ?any machine or device or system or network of systems? that could be used for games of skill or chance that could yield the user something of value as electronic slot machines.

The suit was filed by a LLC owned by a Florida woman who operates an Internet cafe used by migrant workers in South Florida, alleging that they are unfairly grouped in with the online gambling cafes that were targeted by legislators and that the wording of the bill essentially bans all computers and smartphones in the entire state.

?The Florida Legislature rushed to pass broad ? sweeping amendments to existing statutes that violate the United States Constitution in a frenzy fueled by distorted judgment in the wake of a scandal that included the Lieutenant Governor?s resignation,? reads the suit filed on behalf of Incredible Investments, LLC in Miami-Dade County.

No word yet if anyone has been booked on iPhone possession charges.

NC college offering degree in beer

Published: Monday, July 8, 2013 at 15:12 PM.

Capitalizing on a swiftly growing craft beverage industry in Western North Carolina, Blue Ridge Community College is poised to launch a new two-year degree program this fall aimed at training workers for a variety of jobs in the field.

?

College officials expect final state approval of an Associate in Applied Science Degree program in Brewing, Distillation and Fermentation by July 19. It will be part of an overall collaborative program of the North Carolina Community College System ? one of the few of its kind in the country ? with BRCC joining Asheville-Buncombe Technical College and Rockingham Community College as the only three schools seeking final approval in the first year.

?

Chris English, the college?s dean for applied technology who is spearheading the new program, said the surging interest and excitement surrounding WNC?s beer and wine production is reminiscent of California?s Napa Valley in the 1970s as it began transitioning to an agricultural-based tourist destination.

?

?I see a re-branding of ourselves in Henderson and Transylvania counties being something a little bit different,? English said, ?because forever we?ve been known for our apples and we?ll continue to be known for our apples ? that?s a huge product in our area ? but I also think now we have something else to offer. And I think it?s a way to attract new industry to the area. We have the capability, especially with Sierra Nevada and Oskar Blues being here.?

?

College officials also are aware that on a national level, the consumer push toward hand-crafted, fuller flavored beer shows no signs of slowing down. According to the Brewers Association, a Boulder, Colo.-based trade group representing craft breweries, craft beer is a $10 billion-plus industry whose dollar share of the overall beer market reached beyond 10 percent in 2012.

?

Last year, more than 400 new breweries opened in the U.S. ? the biggest surge since the period just after Prohibition ended ? bringing the total number of breweries nationwide to more than 2,400.

?

?I think it?s a great idea for a school to start this kind of program,? said Andy Cubbin, co-owner and head brewer at Southern Appalachian Brewery in Hendersonville. ?(Craft beer) is certainly a huge segment ? I think it?s growing about 15 or 16 percent a year and it?s something like (1,250) breweries in the (planning stages) ? so it?s certainly a segment that they should be interested in.?

?

The program

?

BRCC?s impending degree program follows the launch this winter of the Craft Beer Academy, a series of courses - from the fundamentals and business side of the industry to the Oskar Blues Brew School - offered through the college?s Continuing Education department.

?

?That?s the way we launch a lot of what we do here at the college? we start out with continuing ed, short-term, non-credit-type courses, and that?s what we did with what we now call the Craft Beer Academy,? said Lee Anna Haney, BRCC?s director of public relations. ?And so this has been another natural process where we?re getting ready to launch what we call curriculum, or degree, programs in an area that is related to the local job market and where workforce development is needed.?

?

English said Brewing, Distillation and Fermentation is a dual-faceted program, linking the fundamentals and science of brewing with hands-on manufacturing skills tied to the college?s new mechatronics program that could also prepare students for careers outside the beverage industry.

?

This distinguishes BRCC from how AB Tech ? which is focusing on the sales and service side of the business ? will implement the program, college officials say.

?

?We are taking those concepts that we developed with the continuing education program where you?re learning how to brew a product, understanding the fermentation side of it, and we?re combining it with the mechatronics program, which is understanding the materials that it takes to brew that product and to package it and get it out the door,? English said.

?

?So everything that deals with flow/fluid dynamics, pumps, sanitation, sanitation welding, the cleanliness of (the process), running an assembly line, operating that manufacturing plant ? So they?re coming out of the program with two sets of job skills: understanding the brewing side that allows them to work in brew house, and the mechatronics side where they can be qualified to work for other manufacturers like Continental or Eaton or Borg Warner or whoever it may be. So there?s a lot of opportunities out of this program.?

?

Students can also pursue specific areas of study, with individual certificates available in brewing, wine-making and distillation. In addition, BRCC will be guaranteed one spot in Appalachian State University?s four-year, research-based fermentation science program for a qualified student as part of BRCC?s Two-Plus-Two Transfer Agreement with ASU.

?

Cubbin, whose distribution has expanded this year to several downtown Hendersonville accounts, said he expects the business he runs with his wife, Kelly, to require more qualified help down the road as it grows, and he anticipates giving students produced by the program serious consideration.

?

?As far as our brewery is concerned, it?s great to have a pool of potential employees and interns; having somebody come in that knows a little bit about what they?re doing is certainly helpful ? not having to train someone from the ground up,? Cubbin said.

?

?It saves us a lot of money, and in this industry you go through a lot of employees ? it?s just the nature of the work. And (for the student), a brewery like mine, especially, can be a stepping stone to bigger and better things.?

?

BRCC also is currently seeking state funding to purchase a brew house for the college that would enable students to eventually brew beer on an actual commercial system, leading, perhaps, to the opening of a tasting room like the one at ASU that would give students the chance to learn that side of the business as well.

?

?That?s the best way to go,? Cubbin said, ?because you can?t get enough hands-on time in a brewery. That?s one thing you cannot teach (in a classroom), so the fact that they have all these programs for people is great. Being self-taught, there are definitely things I wish I?d learned before we opened.?

?

Gary Glancy writes for The Hendersonville Times-News.

?

?

Getting started

Blue Ridge Community College will hold information sessions for prospective students interested in the proposed Brewing, Distillation and Fermentation program, which is slated to begin this fall pending approval by the State Board of Community Colleges.?

?

Students can earn an associate degree, diploma or certificate.

?

Information sessions will be held Monday on the Henderson County campus in Flat Rock at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Spearman Building, room 128. Sessions will also be held at the Transylvania County campus in Brevard at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday, July 15. Reservations are not required and sessions will last about an hour.

?

BRCC plans to begin the admissions and financial aid application processes for the program on July 23.
